MOVIE FILM TO AVI FILE FORMAT
THE BEST WAY TO ARCHIVE and EDIT YOUR HOME MOVIE FILMS
MOVIE FILM IS STORED IN A FILE FORMAT FOR EASY TRANSFER TO YOUR COMPUTER FOR EDITING.
R8mm, S8mm, 16mm & 35mm movie film transfer and captured to AVI File format
Film transfer to DVD, external portable hard Drive or USB Flash Drive Sticks
NO MORE "CAPTURING" and creating files from your Mini-DV tape. We "capture" the film direct on our hard drive to AVI file format then burn it to DVD, a hard drive or, to a USB Flash Drive Stick and you simply put the DVD or plug in the hard drive or USB Flash Drive stick in to your computer and select the files for transfer to your editing software and create and edit your own home movie.
Films will be transferred and saved in AVI (Audio-Video Interleaved) DV TYPE 1 AVI file (codec = dvsd) at a bit rate of 25.0 Mbps and a display size of 720x480 in a video format of NTSC then stored on either a DVD-R 4.7GB disk, an portable external hard drive or a USB Flash Drive Stick. The capacity of the media depends on the amount of film that requires transferring and what media you want it transferred to.
If we transfer your films to the maximum size of a large reel of film, the file may be too large to download to your computer, so we will create several files for each film rather than one film per file, unless the films are shorter than ten minutes (such as 50 or 100 foot reels). We will number the files in sequence for easy access.
For film orders of more than 1000 feet we would transfer the films direct to an external portable (plug & play) hard drive. (Contact us for current prices on portable hard drives or you may supply your own.)
Windows© Movie Maker and most PC & Mac based computers with video editing software supports AVI.
NOTE: WE CURRENTLY DO NOT TRANSFER FILMS TO QUICKTIME™. For those using Mac OS X you may need to convert AVI files to QuickTime.mov files.
We will compete with any written quotation offering the same level of service & give you further discounts. Please supply us a quote or quotes by e-mail before submitting your order to our lab. DUPLICATIONS OF YOUR HOME MOVIE FILM:
If you require further duplications of your home movie film, we recommend having them transferred DIRECT to DVD or DV (Digital Video Tape) rather then transferring to VHS for better quality. DV & DVD gives you twice the quality of VHS and lasts at least 5 to 10 times longer. There is NO generation loss when transferring from DVD to DVD or DV to DVD. If you require VHS copies for distribution we can make those directly from your DVD or DV Master. Transferring to VHS is not recommended as a choice of preserving your home movies.
We convert your film to a digital format and preserve them in that format, (DV or DVD) for the primary reason that the images can then be transferred over and over without loss of quality. This is not true with analog formats, such as VHS or Betacam, where loss occurs with each subsequent transfer. This is called "generational loss". For example, if a VHS tape is copied to a second VHS tape, the quality of the second tape will be reduced. If the second tape is then transferred to a third tape, the quality of the third tape is reduced even further. In other words, each generation of the tape is reduced in quality.
This is not true of digital media, however. DV tape can be copied over and over, from one generation to the next, without a loss of quality when using firewire connection. Why? Because the digital format contains the computer code which can re-create the images, and which is preserved with each transfer, whereas the VHS (analog) tape contains electronic impulses, which diminish in their integrity with each transfer.
We are listed with KODAK Motion Picture Transfer Facilities
COMPLETE CLEANING, LUBRICATION, RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION OF HOME MOVIE FILM IS OPTIONAL WITH TRANSFERS TO AVI FILES:

Before requesting a quote for your film please prepare a physical description of your film as best you can. You may also send the film to our lab for a no obligation inspection and quote.
What is the format of your film, Super 8mm, Regular 8mm or 16mm?
What is the film title or collection name?
What is the approximate date?
Approximately how long is each reel, measured in feet?
Is the film colour or black and white?
Do you have positive, a negative, original or A and B Rolls?
Are the films on reels or cores?
Does the film have a sound track? What kind is it?
What decay and damage does the film exhibit: colour fading, shrinkage, warping and curling, image deterioration, tears, broken splices, damaged perforations, vinegar syndrome? (See "Film Condition" below for more information).
What masters and copies are required and what format you need?
Will you want to add titles, credits, menus or other introductory material to the masters and copies?
FILM CONDITION: Most Super 8mm film is found to be in good condition, some regular 8mm film & 16mm film can be in poorer condition depending on its age and stored condition. If your film is in poor condition, has a white powder or smells like vinegar, then your film will need to be cleaned, lubricated, restored & preserved. If your film is broken or the splices have come unglued or separated then splicing/editing will have to be performed. DO NOT USE HOUSEHOLD TAPE TO REPAIR OR SPLICE YOUR FILMS, use only the recommended film splicing tape or glue. If your films are mounted backwards on their original film reels then they will have to be remounted. More information on Movie film cleaning, lubrication, restoration, preservation
SUBMITTING ORDERS TO THE LAB:
If you choose to send films to our lab for transfer please e-mail or phone us before sending so we can make sure you are fully informed about the process and the options available.
When submitting film to the lab please number them CLEARLY in order of sequence, Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. (do not use POST-IT Notes, they fall off).
MIXING FILM FORMATS: R-8MM, S-8MM, 16MM with or without sound: If you have a mixture of different film formats (a combination of R-8mm, Super8, Super8 with sound or 16mm) we request that you do not mix the formats. Our system requires a complete changeover for each format, and therefore having to switch between formats for every reel adds significantly to the transfer time and could result in an additional service charge. To avoid this simply ensure that the order of your transfer places all reels of a certain format together (R-8mm & Super8, Super8 with sound 16mm or 16mm with sound respectively) R-8mm is the older format and would usually be transferred first then we would transfer Super 8.
Let us know when and how you shipped them so we can keep track of the shipment for you.
Once the films arrive we will e-mail or phone and issue you an order number and we will perform a complete inspection on your films and schedule in the processing date. Please fill out the order form and send it with your order
We will compete with any written quotation offering the same level of service & give you further discounts. Find "ANY COMPANY in North America" that offers lower prices and the same quality of service on film transfers to AVI files and we will beat their price. Please supply a quote or quotes from any other film transfer facility. If they truly offer equal quality of service at a lower regular listed price then we do, we will beat their price. Guaranteed!
