AUDIO INFORMATION
We use commercial quality turntables, cassette decks, reel to reel decks, CD burners and digital audio mixers and master to Professional Quality CD-Rs (not the cheap ones) with options to use mastering audio CDs or gold CDs. We provide the option of analog audio (all formats) re-mastered and recorded in real-time with NO compression to WAV files or conversion of records to MP3 files for MP3 compatible players. MP3 files are highly compressed and do not provide the best possible audio quality but the cost is less expensive than complete digital audio restoration.
1/4" REEL TO REEL TO AUDIO CD
1/4" reel to reel audio tape
The first reel to reel tape recorders were introduced in Canada and USA in the late forties.
Tracks - Originally machines and tapes were full track, recording across the full width of the tape.
Then half track allowing two separate mono recordings on each side of a tape, or one single stereo recording.
Most open reel recordings are on 1/4" tape and recorded in one of the following forms -
Speed - 15, 7.5, 3.75, 1.78 IPS (inches per second)
Reel size - 7" (1200ft), 5" (600ft) or 3" (100').
For your guidance, below are the approximate running times (one pass) of the various reel sizes.
Length Spool (Reel) Diameter 15 ips
(38 cm)7.5 ips
(19 cm)3.75 ips
(9.5 cm)1.78 ips
(4.9 cm)100 ft 3" ONE SIDE 5 min 10 min 16 min 30 min 600 ft 5" ONE SIDE 8 min 16 min 32 min 60 min 1200 ft 7" ONE SIDE 16 min 32 min 64 min 90 min The total cost depends on the length of the tapes and how many CD's we make.
Unless you have logged the tape and know the duration, it is hard to predict how long each tape is. Knowing the size of the reel does not mean too much but we can base a quote by time. (see above) It depends on how thick the tape is (which determines the length of the tape), the speed at which it was recorded, the number of tracks, if the tape was recorded on both sides, etc.
Armed with this knowledge, you can order based on an "estimate" of 1 CD per tape. However, it could be 2 CD's per tape (even more, if the tape was recorded at very slow speed).
We will not know how may CD's will result until we actually finish recording each tape.
If, after we begin processing, we find out that the tape is blank or can not be recorded, we will not make a CD, but charge only return shipping of the material to the customer.
AUDIO CASSETTES
Audio Cassettes come in various lengths. Unless you have logged the tape and know the duration, it is hard to predict how long each tape is. Some tapes are marked 20 minutes, 30 minutes and so on but the tapes may not be full if they were home recorded. Most store bought tapes will have the length marked on them which will make it easier to predict how many tapes will fit on each 80 minutes CD. It is hard to give an exact quote unless you know the length of each tape you want transferred.
8 TRACK AUDIO TAPE CARTRIDGE
Most store bought 8 track tapes will have the length marked on them which will make it easier to predict how many tapes will fit on each 80 minute CD. The average 8 track is the same as an LP length, between 40 to 45 minutes in length.
