GRANTS SUPPORT ARTS AND HERITAGE ACROSS BRITISH COLUMBIA
VICTORIA – Archivists and artists, dancers and drummers in the North, Interior, Central and Kootenay regions of British Columbia will receive $747,760 in Community Gaming Grants supporting youth arts and culture, fairs, festivals and museums.
More than 175 organizations across British Columbia will receive grants to foster talent and support events that celebrate local traditions and customs, Rich Coleman, Minister of Housing and Social Development, announced today.
The Province has budgeted $7.4 million more than last year for gaming grants - a total of $120 million for 2010-2011. The grants will fund approximately 6,000 organizations that support people in need, public safety, youth arts and sports, education and parent and district advisory councils
The category Arts and Culture encompasses youth programs and fairs and festivals suitable for all ages that celebrate community, regional or cultural characteristics, such as the Rossland Gold Fever Follies and the Vernon Winter Carnival. Museums and historical societies are also eligible for funding. Bella Coola, Nelson, Hudson’s Hope, Golden, and Osoyoos are among the communities that received grants to conserve local history.
Effective April 1, 2010, the Province combined bingo affiliation and direct access grants into the Community Gaming Grant program to ensure all community groups have fair and equitable access to gaming funds. This round of grants includes payments honouring multi-year grant commitments made prior to the Community Gaming Grant program.
To date, approximately $57 million has been allocated to gaming grants for 2010-2011. The Province considers applications for community gaming grants four times per year, with each intake devoted to a specific sector.
The list of community gaming grant recipients can be found here:

Pynelogs Art Gallery in Invermere – Egbert Oudendag Retrospective
September 7 – 19, 2010
Radical individualist. Major artistic influence. Sought after and collected. Painter of spare, luminous landscapes and nudes. Suspected forger. West coast artist Egbert Oudendag was all these and more.
After his death in 1998 all Oudendag’s remaining work disappeared, not available for love nor money. Now some paintings have been released from the family collection, and Pynelogs Art Gallery has the rare opportunity to showcase and sell some of his work.
Whether you’re a collector, a lover of fine art, or a student looking to learn from the work of a master, come to Pynelogs Art Gallery in downtown Invermere from September 7 – 19. This opportunity may not come again.

KOOTENAY GALLERY
East Gallery: Ride Off Any Horizon - Royden Josephson,
West Gallery: Break Land - Asha RobertsonJuly 30th - September 12th, 2010 East and West Gallery
Robertson’s exhibition is titled, Break Land. Working with mixed media, her paintings are executed using acrylic, graphite, ink and encaustic. Her subtle images incorporate the use of space, light and structure to challenge the viewer to consider the impact of humans on the landscape and nature’s ability to adapt and reclaim.
Josephson’s work, in his exhibition, Ride Off Any Horizon, is also influenced by natural structures yet he interprets these using bold colours and abstract, almost architectural images. He has chosen this style because he too wishes to demand a higher level of engagement from the viewer and a more dynamic imagination from the artist. “For both the viewer and the artist, the direction of imagination can ride off any horizon”.
The gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday 10-5pm and Sunday 12-4pm.120 Heritage Way

Touchstones Nelson
Now Open! Angelika Werth: Ladies in Tents August 7 to October 17 Gallery B
Local fibre artist Angelika Werth’s exhibition Ladies In Tents is now open! Long recognized for her exceptional skill level in contemporary craft, Werth received the BC Creative Achievement Award in 2008 and was chosen to be this year’s cultural Ambassador in the Arts for the city of Nelson.
In Ladies in Tents, Werth exhibits a series of hand-sewn dresses which explore the idea of the dress as a shelter or dwelling. Her use of house wrap in the making of some of the dresses is derivative of today’s building industry and her use of pioneer canvas tent material in others is evocative of temporary or season dwellings. “The tent dresses are big enough that you could sleep under them,” says Werth.
Angelika Werth started her career with a three-year dressmaking apprenticeship at Yves St. Laurent in Paris which culminated in a Master’s degree in dress design. She currently teaches in the Fibre Department at the Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson and is sought after to teach dressmaking all over western Canada.
Family Day: Mosaics, Mobiles and More! Sunday, August 15 from 1pm to 3 pm
Join us at Touchstones Nelson August 15 from 1pm to 3pm for an afternoon of family fun. Inspired by a tour of Kristi Malakoff’s current exhibition, The Golden Bell, families will create a number of whimsical take-home crafts including origami mobiles and fruit loop mosaics. Participants will also work together to create a mixed-media mural which will be displayed in Touchstones Nelson.
To participate in this two hour workshop contact Touchstones Nelson at 250-352-9813. Spaces are limited. The fee to participate in this workshop is $10.00 for members and $12.00 for non-members. Materials used throughout the workshop are included in the registration fee.
Please note: In order to ensure all participants enjoy the workshop, an adult must accompany participating children and remain for the duration of the workshop. Adults accompanying minors participate free of charge.
Kristi Malakoff: The Golden Bell June 22, 2010 to September 12, 2010 Gallery A Artist Talk: September 9, 2010 at 7pm
Swarms of bees, dancing children, paper cut outs and fruitloop towers are all part of installation artist Kristi Malakoff’s exhibition, The Golden Bell. Inspired by life’s paradoxes, her passion for nature, and her love of making art, Malakoff offers the viewer a glimpse into a fantasy world of awe and beauty. Through her meticulous craftsmanship she transforms everyday materials and familiar objects into works of art that are both playful and subversive.

BC SPIRIT FESTIVALS TO CELEBRATE 2010 LEGACY VICTORIA – The Province is providing $3 million this year to support arts and cultural festivals in more than 150 communities across British Columbia through the 2010 Sports and Arts Legacy, announced Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts Kevin Krueger. “We created the Legacy to celebrate and renew the pride and excitement British Columbians experienced during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games,” said Krueger. “This new BC Spirit Festivals program brings together artists, cultural organizations and all British Columbians to celebrate the spirit of B.C. in our communities.” The BC Spirit Festivals program will support festivals in communities during February, the anniversary of the 2010 Games. Spirit festivals will be delivered across B.C. through local arts councils and community partners with the assistance of BC Spirit Committees. Signature Spirit events will also be held in Vancouver and Victoria. The program will be administered by the Assembly of BC Arts Councils, with support from the BC Arts Council. Grants will be based on population and will provide up to $50,000 to produce festivals in communities. Applications will be adjudicated through a peer-review process. Applications for the BC Spirit Festivals program will be accepted from Aug. 1 to Oct. 6, 2010. After this initial intake, support may be available for festivals that embody the vision of BC Spirit, and take place throughout 2011. “The BC Spirit Festivals are an amazing opportunity for our members and affiliates to lead their communities in celebrating B.C.’s diverse cultures,” said Junko Sakamoto, executive director of the Assembly of BC Arts Councils. “We’re looking forward to working with our partners to showcase B.C.’s arts and culture communities.” The BC Spirit Festivals program is the first arts program to be announced under the 2010 Sports and Art Legacy, established in Budget 2010. The Legacy provides $30 million over three years to enhance arts and cultural opportunities for all British Columbians. More Legacy programs will be announced in the fall of 2010. This year the Province is providing a total of more than $30 million directly to artists and arts and culture groups. Since 2001, the Province has delivered $600 million in support of arts and culture, including more than $134 million through the BC Arts Council.
