Local News, Shows, Call to Artists, and Classes:

Fabulous Fiction Comes to Fernie

There’s fiction, and then there’s fabulous fiction, and Fernie is about to learn the difference as the Fabulous Fiction tour arrives in town.

Acclaimed authors Valerie Compton and Rosemary Nixon are trekking through the west with their Fabulous Fiction tour, and their stop in Fernie (to be emceed by Angie Abdou) is sure to bring some welcome heat to the wintry slopes.

Valerie Compton’s novel Tide Road, a splendidly nuanced chronicle of how abdicating one’s life leaves unexpected legacies, has been praised as “a stark and beautiful book” by Quill & Quire. A devastating portrait of a woman struggling to reconcile an abusive past with her present existence, Tide Road is resplendent in atmosphere and subtle in characterization, resulting in a novel rich in haunting truths.

Kalila, by Rosemary Nixon, is a sensitive, nuanced portrait of a strange horror we all fear to face.  Lauded as “exquisitely written” by the Globe and Mail, Kalila follows the diverging tangents of two young parents whose child has been diagnosed with a variety of bewildering medical issues. Switching perspectives and voices highlight this poetic account of grief, resulting in a sensitive novel told with grace, honesty, and ultimately uplifting humour.

Valerie and Rosemary are excited to bring their fabulous fiction to new audiences, and hope to make some new friends along the way.

CKCA and CBT announce 2012/13 programs

Columbia Basin – Artists in all disciplines—as well as arts, culture and heritage organizations—are invited to apply for funding through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA), which delivers the Arts, Culture and Heritage Program of Columbia Basin Trust (CBT).

For 2012/13, funding has increased by $55,000, to $706,000. This will help CKCA better meet demand in sought-after programs like minor capital for arts and heritage facilities, support for touring and major project funding.

“We’re very happy CBT has increased the funding made available to arts, heritage and culture through our programs,” said Jacquie Hamilton, CKCA Chair.  “The works of these organizations and individuals touch upon the lives of people throughout the Basin, and CKCA appreciates the opportunity to provide support.”

Funding is available for:

individual and group projects;

minor capital projects;

touring;

arts and heritage mentoring/master classes;

organizational development;

major projects;

artists in education;

major exhibits;

major heritage capital projects; and

heritage projects.

“This is support for our neighbours, our museums, our local theatre troupes—for the many ways arts, culture and heritage weave through our lives,” said Gary Ockenden, CBT Director of Community Engagement. “We’re proud CBT can strengthen this sector in order to benefit the whole community.”

Find out more and get the application form by visiting www.basinculture.com, contacting your local community arts council or phoning CKCA at 250.505.5505 or 1.877.505.7355.

SUSTAINABILITY SEMESTERS

Not Just Another Workshop

April 14 & 15, 2012, Nelson BC

Registration is FREE! A limited number of travel/accommodation subsidies are available.

For further Information or to register, visit:  http://kootenaysemester.eventbrite.ca/

ArtsBC, with support from Canadian Heritage/Patrimoine canadien and the BC Arts Council present the BC Arts Sustainability Semesters, a goal-oriented program designed to increase the capacity of BC’s non-profit arts and cultural organizations. The purpose is to help organizations make progress toward increasing their economic sustainability and viability.

Project advisors include the BC Touring Council and the Centre for Sustainability. ArtsBC is also working with arts organizations in host communities around the province to present this project.

WHAT ARE THE SUSTAINABILITY SEMESTERS?

The Sustainability Semesters involves six face-to-face regional sessions that will be presented starting in September 2011 to April 2012. Each Semester includes a one and half day face-to-face learning event led by a team of experts with specialized knowledge in the field of non-profit arts and culture. As well, local experts will be invited to participate as part of the content team. The content of each session will be customized based on the challenges and issues identified by participants in each region.

In addition to being a learning event, participants will establish new goals and begin to develop plans that will contribute to their organization’s sustainability.

As part of the Sustainability Semester, participants will:

Consider what a sustainable non-profit arts or cultural organization looks like;

Explore why good governance, solid planning and skillful management are important to the sustainability of any organization;

Learn how to identify where they are at in terms of their lifecycle;

Improve practices in the areas of financial management, reporting, planning and proposal writing;

Learn how to effectively communicate goals;

Learn about what ‘unwritten’ relevant resources or partners may exist in their local communities and/or regions;

Following the face-to-face opportunities, the content team will provide ongoing support through one-on-one coaching, an on-line forum and follow-up conference calls. Through this process, organizations will begin to address their challenges, and improve their planning to meet their new goals.

Throughout the Semester, participants will have exclusive access to training and resource materials including toolkits, templates, case studies, and a current list of relevant funding opportunities.

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE –NO REGISTRATION FEE!

Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis and is free for representatives from BC’s not-for-profit arts and cultural organizations. Please note we currently accept on-line registrations only(www.artsbc.org). Seating is limited.

We highly encourage arts and cultural organizations to register a minimum of two representatives, preferably three people per organization. The Semesters are more likely to have a positive impact if more than one person from the organization attends.

The Sustainability Semesters are suitable for staff, board and volunteers from both professional and non-professional, not-for-profit arts and cultural organizations including but not limited to representatives from:

Artist cooperatives

Arts centres

Arts councils including regional arts councils

Arts presenters including festivals and concert societies

Arts facility managers

Arts service organizations

First Nations arts and heritage organizations

Francophone arts organizations

Museum and galleries

Heritage and literary organizations

Performing arts groups

WHY ATTEND?

To refresh what you learned long ago

To learn something new

To connect with your colleagues

To build and strengthen your network

KHAOS, at Nelson's Capitol Theatre on March 8, 9 and 10.

NCO will be presenting the world premiere production of the Amy Ferguson Institute's newly commissioned opera, KHAOS, at Nelson's Capitol Theatre on March 8, 9 and 10.

Composed by Nelson resident, Don Macdonald, to a libretto written by local playwright, Nicola Harwood, KHAOS is a re-imagining of the ancient Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone set in a contemporary world of climate change and looming global catastrophe.  KHAOS asks "what would happen if our greed and ambition prevented Persephone from leaving Hades to return to her mother, Demeter, Goddess of Fertility?  Would Demeter's grief and rage end life on earth as we know it?"

Mr. Macdonald's score is extremely compelling and highly atmospheric.  While it is challenging for the singers, they have enjoyed mastering Don's music and look forward to bringing it to life for you on the stage of the Capitol.  Everyone who had the opportunity to hear the same soloists in last June's workshop performance of Mr. Macdonald's first draft of KHAOS was bowled over by the power of the work and the skill of the performers.  With full staging, a live orchestra, a 20 member chorus, brilliantly designed sets and lighting plus a solo dancer, the premiere performances of the final version of Mr. Macdonald's work can't help but be that much more powerful.  Truly, you will not want to miss seeing the birth on West Kootenay's very own new opera.

NCO has assembled the finest cast, chorus, orchestra and production crew available to us and we are thrilled they have agreed to contribute their time and talents to this production.  In addition to Musical Director, Don Macdonald and Stage Director, Nicola Harwood, the designers of the show include achictect, Thomas Loh, as the Set Designer, former New York-based Lighting Designer, Sharon Huizinga and Costume Designer, Lara Blackman.

Soloists for KHAOS include:

  Allison Girvan, soprano, as Persephone

  Audrey Bissett, mezzo sopraono, as Demeter

  Roger Ley, tenor, as Hades

  Kevin Armstrong, baritone, as Cerebrus

  Kathleen Neudorf, soprano, as Adrianna

  Bessie Wapp, alto, as Hekata

  Christoph Martens, tenor, as Helios

  Hirohito Ida, solo dancer

The production also includes a 20 member chorus and a 16 member orchestra to complete the full ensemble Mr. Macdonald's score demands.

Tickets go on sale at the Capitol Theatre Box Office starting January 14th.  To enable us to pull out all the stops for this world premiere production and spare no cost to maximize the production values and impact of the performance, we have had to raise ticket prices for this year's production.  However, to keep KHAOS affordable for people on fixed incomes, we have also held ticket prices for the Saturday afternoon matinee performance at the usual price.  Hopefully this range of prices, from $15 to $50, will offer something suited to every taste and every budget.

On behalf of all of us at Nelson Community Opera, I invite you to join us at the world premiere production and gala reception of KHAOS this coming March.

To learn more about KHAOS and to hear excerpts for the opera, visit our website at www.khaosopera.com.

OXYGEN NEWS

tanya pixie johnson: Artist in Residence at Oxygen

A Sense of Direction
Residency:  January 1  - January 31
Exhibition:   Friday, February 3 - February 11
Opening:     Friday, February 3, 7pm
Artist Talk:   Tuesday February 7, 7pm
Open Studio: Thursdays 12 - 3pm

Visual artist, tanya pixie johnson, will be the artist in residence at Oxygen for the month of January and early February. tanya will use this space and time, 4 weeks, to move through a self created art ceremony acknowledging the four directions. This will be an exploration of the notion of time, its capacity to move sideways, its elasticity, and the present moment. At the beginning of 2012 wherein ancient prophesies have forseen massive changes on this planet, and wherein many can feel the quickening of time, johnson will be interpreting spacially the 4 directions and the centre point that is suspended on the axis between them. The centre that exists even as time speeds up. She will be attempting to harness presence.

She will be drawing on her experiences of indigenous ceremonial ways, those in which she has participated in North America, especially in this Sinixt territory, and in her native South Africa and also on her practice of yoga and meditation. The work will be informed by her familial relationship with the headman and spiritual leader of the Sinixt nation, Bob Campbell. It is with his blessing and request that she include certain information and ancestral knowledge shared by him, in her process of art making. Her inspiration is drawn from this landscape, this tum-ula?x (territory). Her intention is not to represent or depict these ideas or experiences, but to make art as offering.

For four weeks, tanya pixie johnson will be moving through the space in an anti clockwise direction, the way, Campbell says, of creation. This constant movement, he says, has the potential to make time stand still. The viewer, too, will be encouraged to move in this direction.

johnson, originally from South Africa, received her honours in Fine Art from the University of Cape Town. She finds inspiration in living close to the land and forming bridges with indigenous people, ways, ceremony and history. This identity is juxtaposed with her perception of herself as a "scatterling", and the experience of growing up as an urban white girl in a segregated society. http://tanyapixiejohnson.com/

Travelling Light Thurs. Feb 9 7:00pm

Synopsis:

A new play by Nicholas Wright

How had a twenty–two–year–old pretentious layabout made a discovery that would elude every other cinematic pioneer for years to come?

In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is  entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams.

Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work with the National Theatre includes Primo and Stanley – returns to play Jacob.

Comedy Of Errors Thurs. Mar 1 7:00pm

Synopsis:

I in earth, in heaven, or in hell?

Sleeping or waking? mad or well advised?

Known unto these, and to myself disguised!

Two sets of twins separated at birth collide in the same city without meeting for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale. And for no one more so than Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio who, in search of their brothers, arrive in a land entirely foreign to their distant home. A buzzing metropolis, to the outsiders it appears a place of wonderment and terror, where baffling gifts and unexplained hostilities abound. Consistently recognized by strangers, the visitors question their very selves as the turmoil escalates. Meanwhile, Aegeon, father to the Antipholus twins, has been captured searching for his sons and, as an illegal immigrant, is sentenced to death at sunset. Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy will be staged in a contemporary world into which walk three prohibited foreigners who see everything for the first time. Lenny Henry plays Antipholus of Syracuse.

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS
A modern adaptation of the Shakespeare classic, with UK comedian Lenny Henry, directed by Dominic Cook from the Royal Court

War Horse Jan 13-19 7pm nightly @ 2 pm Sat/Sun

Albert, the teenage son of a poor farmer, falls in love with a beautiful bay foal. When the horse, now nearly grown, is brought to auction, his father is the top bidder.

Albert is thrilled and names the colt Joey, but his mother is dismayed—her husband's purchase leaves them without enough money to pay the rent. Albert trains Joey to be a plough horse so that he can earn his keep.

But in 1914, when WWI begins, the army is looking for good horses and his father sells Joey without Albert's knowledge. Albert vows to find Joey one day and bring him home.

Joey is bought by a kind officer, but as a war horse, he experiences the horror of battles in France. Though he endures many hardships, his courage touches the soldiers around him.

 PLEASE SHARE WITH FRIENDS.

 N.B. "Early Bird 75" tix ARE selling FAST!

 TICKETS AT THE ART GALLERY OF GOLDEN

A big serving of Commercial Drive edge...

... is on tap this Saturday night in Golden when Vancouver's east side dance cabaret group Dusty Flowerpot brings its theatrical hit HARD TIMES HIT PARADE to Golden this weekend.

This show ran to sell-out crowds for three weeks in Vancouver last spring. Now HARD TIMES HIT PARADE is on the Made in BC dance on tour circuit this January. With the vaudeville band, Maria in the Shower, and a literal clown car of dancers and characters from the Dance Marathon of the Century, the Flowerpots will be traveling to Golden in the east to Courtenay on the Island with stops in Kelowna and Maple Ridge along the way.

Hard Times Hit Parade is a theatrical event set in a dance marathon in a world reminiscent of the 1930s. Reflecting the economic hardship of our present time, this full-length theatre production is chock-a-block full with swing dance, cabaret, live music, puppetry and ... surprise.
The audience experiences 6 months of dance marathon in one night! Dancing for their livelihoods, enthusiastic couples are worn down by the tribulations of the marathon, dropping off as time progresses to leave only the most determined. Haunted by their own hallucinations, inner voices and deepest desires, the hidden worlds of the contestants come to life before our very eyes.
Hard Times Hit Parade is a story of cooperation, determination and survival in hard times with art, music, and dance and togetherness as unifying, uplifting food for our spirits.

DUSTY FLOWERPOT CABARET

The Dusty Flowerpot Cabaret was formed in 2006 as a collective of dance artists and multidisciplinary artists working in the East Vancouver community with a focus on arts for social change. LONGTIME WEST KOOTENAY WRITER NAMED CANADA'S POET LAUREATE

            Longtime West Kootenay author, editor and teacher Fred Wah has been named Canada's next poet laureate.  House of Commons Speaker Andrew Scheer and Senate Speaker Noel Kinsella jointly made the announcement Tuesday.

            "Fred Wah's poetry is grounded in Canada's political and social landscapes," Scheer said in announcing the appointment.  "He has done much to encourage and promote the importance of literature, culture and language within Canadian society."  Wah is the fifth Canadian writer to hold the position of national poet laureate.

            Wah taught for more than 20 years for Selkirk College, both at the Castlegar campus and as the founder and director of the writing program at Nelson's David Thompson University Centre, which operated between 1979 and 1984.  DTUC, the prototype for B.C.'s university colleges, was a joint initiative of Selkirk and the University of Victoria.  Wah, a former president of the Writers Union of Canada, subsequently taught at the University of Calgary.

            Wah's many books of poetry, essays, and memoir include Diamond Grill, which describes his childhood growing up in Nelson in the 1950s as the son of the owner of a Baker St. Chinese restaurant.  Wah received the 1986 Governor General's Literary Award for his book of poems, Waiting for Saskatchewan, which also chronicles family and personal history.  He was the editor of Canada's first electronic literary magazine, Swift Current, in the 1980s.  His most recent collection of poems is Is a Door (2009).  Wah currently divides his time between his home at Riondel on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, and a pied-ŕ-terre in Vancouver.

I work with felted wool for the joy of its texture and the endless possibilities the medium presents and I use vintage material because it connects me to the past and to all the bygone stories that lie in the various scraps of fabric or accessories. By weaving my experiences into the past lives of others, past and present come together, and I adore the new meanings that are created.  Showing the audience the wonder and imagination that comes with "self-indulgent crafting", I hope to encourage others into creating beautiful and creative tributes to their own "inner child".
Kim O'Brien

2012 Winter/Spring Exhibition Schedule:

January 19 - February 24

Kim O’Brien: A Nelson-based textile artist whose self-taught style is armed with a quirky sense of humour and a fantastical imagination. Her vintage material may be second-hand, but her work is number one with audiences throughout the West Kootenays.

Ursula Albrecht:  An accomplished photographer, Ursula describes her style as “photo-impressionsim”. Her attention to colour and light allows “for the abstraction of subjects to provide much more chararacter than a representational photo”.

Community Gaming Grants Update
January 12, 2012
ArtsBC attended the media conference yesterday at the Port Moody Arts Centre where Ida Chong, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development and Premier Christy Clark announced the Province will reinstate funding eligibility for community gaming grants for adult arts organizations. The announcement was made after the government released the results of a review of community gaming grants system conducted by Skip Triplett in 2011.
A copy of Mr. Triplett's final report may be found here.
The Province said it will also increase support for other organizations that have experienced funding reductions in the past three years, including those responsible for fairs, festivals, youth arts and culture. They said they will continue to work on streamlining the application process, including exploring options for introducing multi-year funding in the coming years.
Premier Clark also announced a special intake for arts organizations that were previously ineligible (deadline is Feb. 13, 2012) . See information here.
"This is welcome news for arts organizations in communities around BC. While we recognize the amount of funding is not at the same level as it was in 2009, the special intake and reinstatement of eligibilty for adult arts organizations will have a positive impact. We will continue to advocate for the allocation of more gaming revenue to BC's arts organizations," said executive director Sheryl McGraw in responding to yesterday’s announcement.

Non-profit arts, sports groups in B.C. to get more money

ian bailey AND marsha lederman

PORT MOODY, B.C. AND VANCOUVER— From Thursday's Globe and Mail
Published Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 9:42PM EST

Despite tough fiscal straits for the province, Premier Christy Clark says non-profit arts, sports and other organizations can count on $135-million in gaming grants beginning with this fiscal year.

Ms. Clark announced Wednesday her government was adding $15-million to the grants budget generated from government-controlled gambling revenue for about 2,000 organizations. There are plans to increase support for other organizations that have lost funding in the past three years, she added.

·                                 Cards now appear to be stacked against Vancouver casino expansion

“The work that community groups do and the services they deliver are important enough that they deserve that certainty that it has to be built into the budget,” she said during a news conference at the Port Moody Arts Centre.

Given the drive to balance the provincial budget, “the fact that we have been able to find this money and bake it right into the budget I hope will tell people this is a really high priority for me and for my government,” the Premier said.

Without naming Gordon Campbell specifically, she said her predecessor erred in cutting the grants, part of a deficit-cutting measure in the 2009-2010 budget. “The mistake was not adequately recognizing the value we get for every tax dollar we invest in community organizations,” she said.

Ms. Clark’s announcement came after Skip Triplett, former president of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, tabled a government-ordered review of the issue. Mr. Triplett, attending the news conference, said he was pleased with the government’s decision.

Rob Gloor, the new executive director of Vancouver’s Alliance for Arts and Culture, said he was “very encouraged” by the announcement, in particular the reinstatement of eligibility for groups focusing on the arts for adults. “That is very significant news for those who have suffered most from the cuts,” he said.

But Spencer Chandra Herbert, NDP critic for Tourism, Culture and the Arts, said the restoration of funding to $135-million is inadequate, falling far short of the 2008-09 level of $156-million.

“What I would like to see is a real acknowledgement that the Liberals made a terrible mistake in cutting charities so drastically,” Mr. Chandra Herbert said, adding that the $15-million increase in gaming funding had already been announced last year.

Victoria-based Intrepid Theatre, which also runs the Victoria Fringe Festival and the Uno Festival, lost $61,000 in gaming grants – more than 10 per cent of its annual budget – forcing it to slash programming, reduce staff hours and replace all front-of-house staff with volunteers.

That is a common story, particularly for smaller organizations, said Intrepid’s general manager Ian Case. “My big problem is that damage has been done,” he said Wednesday. “The possibility of actually reinstating everything that’s been lost has been hard to do and is going to take a lot of time and a lot of effort.”

He said he couldn’t help but be cynical about the timing of the announcement, a little over a year before the next provincial election. “That said,” Mr. Case added, “any kind of restoration is a good start.”

Dave Bidini to Come Back to Teach Songwriting this Summer

 Dave Bidini will be back in Wells from Tuesday, July 31 - Friday, August 3 to put songwriters to the test once again. He will also be performing at the ArtsWells Festival.

 Ross Douglas who participated in the program last summer had this to say of Bidini's program: "He was a taskmaster. We essentially had to come up with a new song or a good start to one each evening based on topics that he gave us in class each day. As well, our songs were then performed for our fellow classmates with peer criticism taken and given freely. I found myself greatly taken with my fellow classmates and their various styles and perspectives. And Mr. Bidini himself was ever encouraging-all the while ready with intelligent criticism."

Dave was featured on CBC's Canada Reads recently with his book "On a Cold Road," which chronicled his legendary band, the Rheostatics' 1996 cross-Canada tour with The Tragically Hip.
