Kootenay Lake Swimming Beach next to Toxic Waste Site TMTV/BCTV Kootenays - Nelson B.C. Canada, June 16, 2007 - The 'Federal Contaminated Site Inventory' lists a toxic waste site at the RCMP Station next to Nelson's orange bridge and Lakeside Park where many children & adults swim. The largest concern is for the children who swim at Lakeside Park and especially for the fishermen who catch and eat fish south of Nelson's 'Orange Bridge'. The other concern would be for the RCMP staff who work in the building were the contaminated site is located. The area was used many years ago as a shipping yard and bulk fueling station. Out of 11,556 contaminated sites listed on the Treasury Board of Canada's 'Federal Contaminated Site Inventory', only 994 of those sites are listed as: 'Action Required'. The toxic waste site next to Nelson's Lakeside Park is one of those sites which the Federal Government feels require action. Included in the toxic soils at that RCMP Station are: PHC's (petroleum hydrocarbons) and heavy metals including, copper, lead, zinc and cadmium. Children are much more susceptible to these poisons. A provincial study identified lead in soils exceeding provincial limits for residential, but not commercial uses. The report does not mention the impact on the local beaches, lake, wildlife or the impact on humans who swim or eat fish caught near the site.

SNOWMOBILER CAUGHT IN AVALANCHE NEAR CRANBROOK Feb 24 -TMTV/BCTV Kootenays -A snowmobiler is recovering in Hospital and lucky to be alive after he was swept away by an avalanche near Cranbrook BC. Witnesses say he was buried up to his waist in snow when his snowmobiling party of six found him. The snowmobiler from Jaffery BC was airlifted by helicopter to Fernie Hospital suffering from a broken leg. It is believed that the avalanche was caused by the snowmobiler climbing the ridge of the Lizard Creek Range northwest of Fernie BC. The man can thank a guide from Powder Cowboy Catskiing who observed the incident from a nearby ridge and was able to radio for help. The avalanche danger in the South Rockies is considerable and the Canadian Avalanche Association says, the danger ratings might suggest on first reading that things are rather boring and benign right now, but that is not the case. Cornice fall triggering wind slabs occurring naturally in the alpine will remain a concern throughout the weekend.
