REPAIRS of VIDEOTAPE SIGNAL LOSS OR UNSTABLE IMAGES:
We can eliminate picture jitter and time base errors from videotape playback and insure a stable on-screen image through the use of dual-field full-frame reconstruction. We can restore distorted or misshapen vertical and horizontal sync and color burst signals. Our professional TBC (Multi-system Time Base Corrector/Frame Synchronizer ) have an integral Processing Amplifier allows the adjustment of Brightness, Contrast, Color Saturation, Hue and Sharpness. A Digital Comb Filter provides superior video signal decoding and the AGC (Automatic Gain Control) insures a proper one volt output signal from an input signal range of 0.5 to 2.0 volts. Our TBCs accommodate most NTSC, PAL and SECAM video signal standards.
RESTORING VIDEO & AUDIO TAPE:
Dirt, dust, damaged by being submerged in water as a result of a flood or disaster or has been exposed to other liquids or damaged caused by heat or high humidity, sticky-tape syndrome or mold can be repaired depending on the tapes condition. There are several ways of restoring a tape and they should all be preformed by our professionals who have experience in dealing with problem tapes. Magnetic tape restoration can be defined as a process by which a video or audiotape, degraded by age, is temporarily or permanently transcribed to a playable condition and returned to its original state. The process is not meant to extend the tape's life, but to bring it back to a place where it can be played backed successfully and transferred to another media. The new master would be as faithful a reproduction of the original as possible without altering the quality. There are several options depending on the symptoms. We have cleaning machines that use tissue and fabric that has been found to be the safest, most-efficient way of cleaning a tape of chemical residue and debris. Sticky-tape syndrome, which occurs when a tape's binder layer begins to delaminate from the base material is the most difficult to restore. The process of bringing a tape back to a playable condition can be a complicated procedure. Tapes in this condition will not playback easily, if at all. If properly identified, these tapes can benefit from exposure to elevated temperatures (Baking) for several hours, which bakes the binder back onto the base material. This consolidation of binder and base stabilizes the tape system so that it can be played once while the information is copied on to a more stable format. Baking tapes is an extreme measure that irreversibly physically modifies the tape. The results from the baking process are not always successful.
OLD MOVIE FILM DEVELOPING - Special Service
Old Super 8mm, 8mm & 16mm film developing: All film sent to us for developing must be paid in advance of processing. Cost will include the cost of developing, transfer to DVD or DV & shipping charges to & from our lab to our out-lab film processing center.
Motion picture film is processed in regularly scheduled runs and all processing is done by our out-lab service here in Canada. Deadline for each run is the 20th of the month; turnaround is approximately 7 to 10 weeks from that date. The out-lab is able to process all types of old small format (16 mm and smaller) motion picture film. The brand and age of film, correct exposure and proper storage conditions will all affect the outcome of the film.
1. Kodak Ektachrome, Agfa Moviechrome or similar dye incorporated color films.
With these films the dye is part of the film emulsion and it is still possible to process these films into color images. Though our success with this type of film is generally 90% - 95%, they are likely to turn out faded and color shifted from age.
2. Kodak Kodachrome, Agfachrome, Anscochrome, Fujichrome or similar non-dye incorporated color films.
With this type of film, the color dye is not part of the film emulsion and it is no longer possible to have it processed into color images because the required chemistry is no longer available. This film must be processed into a B&W negative and then transferred to video so that you can view the image in positive. Our success with this type of film is lower than with the Ektachrome type. For Super 8 format, the overall success rate is around 80%; for regular 8 (which is most often older film) the success rate is around 50% - 60%. The image quality ranges from fairly good to extremely poor; most often the quality is fair to very poor. If there is absolutely no image on your film, it will not be transferred and a partial refund will be made. If we are able to make out any kind of image at all on your film, regardless of quality or quantity, it will be transferred and the usual price will be charged.
B&W film.
Most small format B&W motion picture film that we receive in for processing was intended to be processed into a positive image. If your film is less than twenty years old or so, we can refer you to a motion picture lab that is able to process your film into a positive. If it is older than this, we recommend that it be processed into a B&W negative (see item 2 above). If there is absolutely no image on your film it will not be transferred and a partial refund will be made. If we are able to make out anything at all on your film, regardless of quality or quantity, it will be transferred and the usual price will be charged.
If we are unable to salvage any kind of image at all from your 8mm film (any format) or 16mm magazine format film, there is a charge per roll, less volume discount if applicable.
