FIRE DESTROYS NELSON BC BUSINESS

AIRING , FRIDAY JULY 30 @ 6PM ON GLOBAL TV - A stubborn fire played havoc for firefighters Thursday evening.

Raw video of fire

NELSON BC CANADA:  (Nelson Fire & Rescue media release) At 1816 hours on July 29, 2010, Nelson Fire Rescue Dispatch Centre received a 911 Emergency Call reporting that the restaurant was filling with smoke.  The on duty Captain and Fire Fighter activated an all member callout and arrived on scene in Engine #2 within minutes of the initial call.

The building itself, and neighboring businesses, including the Hume Hotel and an adjacent apartment building on the 400 block of Baker Street were all evacuated and the power to the downtown core was disconnected for safety reasons.

The Nelson Fire Department responded with a total of 21 members, 4 engines, and two utility vehicles to this fire emergency.  In spite of the behavior of the fire, Nelson Fire Department members were able to contain the fire to the building of origin and protect the adjacent buildings from any fire exposure.  Crews were set up in various strategic places including the roof of the Hume Hotel to surmount a defensive attack on the fire, but the fire continued to burn into the night regardless of the 4000 gallons of water per minute dousing it.

Nelson Fire and Rescue Services gained control of the fire at approximately 0030 hours and were able to finally extinguish the flames near 0315 hours; unfortunately the building could not be saved but there appears to be only minor smoke and water damage to the adjacent building with the exception of the Hume Hotel whose lower levels experienced flooding.  Luckily no injuries were reported by civilians or members of the Fire Department.

Nelson Fire & Rescue Services would like to extend a sincere thank you to all those who aided in this event;  BC Ambulance, Nelson City Police, Nelson Hydro, and City of Nelson Public Works attended at the scene to provide support; the Osika family who provided sustenance to the firefighters while on scene; and the Real Canadian Wholesale Club who donated bottled water for the firefighters' on scene rehab center.

At this time the cause of the blaze in not known but a fire investigation is being conducted to determine its origin.
